[AGGIORNAMENTO] Il team di Skype ha da poco specificato dei dettagli riguardo il futuro supporto dei servizi rispetto ai sistemi operativi Microsoft. In particolare, veniamo a sapere che le app per Windows Phone 8.x e per Windows RT funzioneranno fino ai primi mesi del 2017, quando la migrazione al Cloud sarà completata; il supporto terminerà, invece, a Ottobre 2016 per entrambe le piattaforme.
A seguire, la dichiarazione ufficiale circa Windows RT:
While support will no longer be available from October 2016, Skype for Windows RT will continue to work (possibly with some limitations) until early 2017, when we finish moving Skype calling to the cloud.

La migrazione al Cloud porterà dei miglioramenti nelle comunicazioni, eliminando alcuni difetti noti; al tempo stesso, ciò porterà all’abbandono delle vecchie piattaforme Microsoft, come appena visto.

Tramite il blog di Skype, la società ha annunciato che Windows Phone non verrà più supportato in futuro. Niente panico! Non verrà abbandonato Windows 10 Mobile, bensì solo le versioni precedenti del sistema operativo per smartphone, ossia Windows Phone 8 e 8.1; allo stesso modo, le versioni Android inferiori alla 4.03 non godranno più dei servizi Skype, mentre gli iDevice Apple potranno usufruirne solo da iOS 8 in poi. Il supporto ai computer Windows resta ancora esteso a molte versioni, dal vetusto Windows XP al recente Windows 10.

Come spiega Gurdeep Pall del reparto Skype:
The transition has been ongoing for a while and isn’t complete quite yet. The team is working hard to ensure that our users can continue to use Skype smoothly throughout the transition. At times, unforeseen issues have cropped up, like messages not syncing across devices, or notifications not being delivered reliably. Knowing the impact of these issues for our users, we fix these issues as quickly as we can. We do ask all our users to update Skype to ensure they benefit from our latest fixes and improvements and to enable a smooth transition to the cloud.
By focusing our efforts on the devices and operating systems where the majority of our users are, we can concentrate our efforts on what’s most important such as call quality and new features. In the future, Skype will continue to support our newly released lighter, faster and more responsive UWP app for Windows 10, Skype for iPhone, iPad and Android as well as a web-based native version of Skype for other supported platforms like Linux, Mac and previous Windows operating systems which will benefit from the latest ORTC or WebRTC technology that we’ve been working on for the last year.
Fino ad oggi, il famoso servizio VoIP funzionava tramite le reti P2P che, però, hanno portato nel tempo a problemi di varia natura, tra cui la mancata sincronizzazione dei messaggi fra i diversi dispositivi e la ricezione inaffidabile delle notifiche. Come spiegato, il modo per assicurare una maggiore qualità dei servizi Skype è tramite la transizione dal modello P2P a quello cloud, basato su tecnologie di comunicazione nuove (ORTC/WebRTC).
Tale transizione necessita, quindi, di piattaforme che possano supportare i nuovi protocolli: ecco spiegato perché i sistemi operativi più vecchi non saranno supportati.
Il passaggio alle nuove tecnologie terminerà entro pochi mesi, dunque se possedete un Windows Phone siete ancora in tempo per passare a un nuovo smartphone con Windows Mobile 10 o per fare l’aggiornamento gratuito.
